SALUTING OUR LIFELONG LEARNERS

Sixteen individuals and seven companies received the Lifelong Learner
Awards 2006 from President S R Nathan for their tenacious efforts in embracing
lifelong learning to enhance employability and productivity.

Staying ahead in a fast changing global economy requires Singapore workers to have the drive to identify and seize new opportunities yet be fleet-footed in navigating the challenges that come with globalisation.

The Lifelong Learner Awards celebrates such extraordinary individuals who stand out for their perseverance in staying relevant at the workplace by learning and picking up new skills.

The Awards also give recognition to employers who proactively put in place a culture of lifelong learning at the workplace.

This is the 5th anniversary of the Lifelong Learner Awards and MediaCorp Radio celebrates this milestone together with our partners the Singapore Workforce Development Agency, the National Trades Union Congress and Spring Singapore. It is doubly special as 2006 is also the 70th anniversary of radio broadcasting in Singapore.

This year the Awards have been strengthened to not only recognise efforts that add to the employability of workers but also how such efforts have contributed to higher productivity at work. The benefits the winning companies reap show the concrete outcomes that lifelong learning can bring.

A record high of more than 1200 nominations were received this year - a 70% increase over 2005. The difficult task of identifying the deserving winners fell on the distinguished panel of judges led by Dr Ahmad Magad, Member of Parliament for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC. The Singapore Productivity Association also deserves credit for its efforts in shortlisting the worthy companies.

Congratulations to each of the Award winners. May the stories of their struggle, perseverance and triumph inspire you to press on in your own learning journey.
