Harvesting the fruits of her learning labour
With three Masters’ degree and a PhD in the pipeline, Genedine has travelled a long way up the
learning ladder. Speak to her and you’ll discover a strong sense of purpose.
“Whatever I do, I do it for the community. I look and sense what is needed of me and I try to
fill that need.” That is why she chose to do her Masters in three different areas – Nursing, Public Policy and
Health Economics – as she felt that they are critical in healthcare delivery. A healthcare specialist all her
working life, she likens learning to farming.
“If the land is left unattended, it will remain barren. When tilled, it’s full of possibilities
and great potential even if the fruits may take some time to bear.” Her broad-based grounding has allowed her to
rise up to the challenge of a job reassignment last year which required her to start new functions in infection
control, patient safety and other long-term care facility.
Her training has also helped her to introduce new approaches at work. For instance, after
completing her Master of Health Economics, she introduced a new way of assessing healthcare projects to include
productivity gains, in addition to assessing clinical effectiveness. Currently, she has set her sights on acquiring
a PhD in public policy to develop her skills further in health systems and policy research.
