Lee King is our oldest Lifelong Learner Award winner. He is a fighter who never gives up, having battled leukemia
but never wavered in his quest to constantly upgrade to stay employable. Truly an inspiration to many.
Born in Guangdong, China, Wee Lee King and his family moved to Kluang, Johor, during World War II.
At the end of the war, he came to Singapore to study at the Chinese High School. While schooling, Lee King’s mother fell
veryill and he had to work to support his family.
After completing his secondary education, he did a two-year full-time Teachers Training Course in Chinese
Language. He was also working part-time as a Clerical Assistant at the Chinese High School at the same time.
In 1956, Lee King completed his course and was posted to River Valley Secondary School. At this time, he
was selected for a Teachers Exchange Programme run by the University of Kansas (USA) where he completed a course in
Administration and Supervision in Secondary Education. He returned to Singapore thereafter and continued teaching at
River Valley Secondary School.
Subsequently, Lee King took up a six-year evening Bachelor’s course in Chinese Language Literature and
obtained his degree in 1969. He was later promoted to School Principal. Separately, he also attended a Voluntary Police
Training course and joined the People’s Association. Lee King is also a freelance Insurance Consultant but has always
made time to do social work.
In the late 1980s, Lee King was diagnosed with leukemia. Undaunted, he battled the illness and emerged a
survivor. In 1998, he started on his two-year Masters in Business Administration and went on to attain his PhD in 2003.
Lee King is presently a part-time lecturer in Logistics Management at a private college. He is
undoubtedly a great inspiration to us.
