The Challenge is scheduled to take place on 1 October 2006 (“Challenge Day”) and is subject to change as may be notified by Shell.
At least one team member must attend a compulsory two-hour pre-Challenge Day briefing (“Briefing”), during which the organizers will provide further details of the Challenge and other relevant instructions.
The Briefing will be held on 30 September 2006. Details will be provided on the email to qualified participants.
Failure to attend the Briefing will result in automatic disqualification.
Registration will take place immediately after the Briefing. At the registration, teams will be required to provide the particulars of team members and details of the participating car. Upon registration, each team will be provided with the following:
- 3M Car Stickers (to be pasted on the participating car throughout the Challenge as required by the organizers)
- Shell Fuel Economy Challenge Passports (to be used to record odometer and fuel gauge readings)
- Participants Race ID tags (to be worn by all participants throughout the race day for easy identification)
6. CHALLENGE DAY REGISTRATION
On Challenge Day, teams must first report to their individually assigned Shell stations at such timeas informed by Shell to get a free first fill up of Shell petrol for the purpose of participating in the challenge. At the refueling station, the odometer mileage reading will be clocked and a seal placed over the fuel tank and the car bonnet. Thereafter, teams will be required to proceed to the flag-off point. All this will be done in the presence of the AA in their official capacity as adjudicators (“judges”) for the challenge.
A team will be immediately disqualified from further participation in the Challenge if any seal placed on the participating car’s fuel tank or car bonnet is removed and/or tampered with at any time during the Challenge by any party who is not authorized directly by Shell.
After the first fill up, teams must report at the start point [as informed by Shell] with their registered participating cars on 1 October 2006 latest by 9.00 a.m. for registration at the registration booth. Participating cars will be flagged off from the start point at 10.00 a.m. Teams that arrive after 10.30 a.m. will be automatically disqualified.
All team members must wear the Identification tags and all participating cars must sport the car stickers that are issued throughout the duration of the Challenge.
7. FLAG-OFF
There will be two (2) Challenge routes as designated by the organizer. Each team will be assigned one route. The Clue-Packs will provide clues that will direct participating cars to their first Pit-stop. As different sets of Clue-Packs will be prepared, the first Pit-stop for each participating car may differ depending on the Clue-Pack that is picked.
8. PIT-STOPS
There are a total of eight (8) Pit-stops made up of five (5) checkpoints and three (3) challenges. At each Pit-stop, teams will be provided with a clue to their next Pit-stop. Teams will be required to locate and proceed to various locations (including Shell stations) and complete challenges along the way. Upon successful completion, teams will be given a stamp in their Shell Fuel Economy Challenge Passport.
Some of the challenges will require teams to find items with given clues and/or require team member(s) to take part in physical challenges.
It is the responsibility of each team to collect stamps using the Shell Fuel Economy Challenge Passport as proof of completion of a challenge and/or arrival at a designated checkpoint at each Pit-stop. The Passport will only be stamped if both team members are present before the Official issuing the stamps.
Stamps will be issued sequentially in accordance with the prescribed route and/or clue. Should a team miss a Pit-stop or fail to obtain a stamp at a previous Pit-stop or is out of sequence, it must back-track to the previous Pit-stop(s) to get the Passport stamped.
9. WINNING TEAMS
The top three (3) participating cars in each car category (excluding the Shell staff teams) in terms of fuel efficiency which arrive at the finish point by the closing time with all stamps from the Pit-stops will be named as winners.
Fuel efficiency or mileage (km per liter) will be measured by total distance traveled divided by the total amount of fuel used. This mileage will be measured against the car manufacturer’s specification. The percentage improvement of the mileage over the manufacturer’s specification will indicate the teams’ fuel efficiency rate or mileage.
The car manufacturer’s specification of all participating cars will be obtained from the car manufacturers by Shell and/or as determined by Shell.
If none of the teams get all the stamps, the most fuel-efficient team in each car category (excluding the Shell staff teams) with the most number of stamps will be declared the winner.
Save for medical reasons or other emergencies, all team members of a winning team must be present in order for the team to be entitled to receive the prize. If, at the time the results are announced, a winning team is either absent or without a team member, the prize will be forfeited and given to the next best team within the category or re-drawn as the case may be.
In case of any disputes, Shell’s decision will be final and conclusive.
10. CHALLENGES
Teams will be given physical and mental challenges at three (3) of the Pit-stops with varying degrees of difficulties. All teams will be required to fulfill certain tasks and challenges before progressing to the next Pit-stop.
Upon arrival at a Pit-stop, teams must first register at the designated registration area before proceeding to get their next clue or participate in the challenges.
Upon registration at the “challenge” Pit-stops, teams will be given a pack containing instructions and the rules and regulations for the challenges (“Instruction Pack”). The Instruction Pack will also indicate the number of team members that are allowed to participate in each challenge.
The challenges will be conducted on a “first-come-first-served” basis. Teams must wait in line for their turn at the challenges.
Upon successful completion of the challenges, teams will be given a stamp on their Shell Fuel Economy Challenge Passport. If a team is unable to complete a challenge successfully, the team may choose to make further attempts to complete the challenge by joining the back of the queue or serve a time penalty. Each team will be allowed not more than three (3) attempts at each challenge. The length of the time penalty may vary for each challenge.
NO assistance, support or physical contact from non-participants (other than the designated Challenge Officials) will be permitted during the challenges. This includes solving clues, handling of gear and /or equipment.
